Services
Berger Legal provides a variety of services to its clients and serves as a powerful partner in delivering a full range of comprehensive legal services depending on client needs.
We Provide a Range of Support for In-House Law Departments : The firm regularly provides support to in-house law departments by handling overflow, typically independently managing a designated segment of commercial transactions. Our attorneys may interface directly with appropriate business personnel and keep the in-house law department informed of material developments. We frequently team up with in-house attorneys to jointly handle larger commercial negotiations, thereby easing the burden on in-house counsel who often have a large number of day-to-day responsibilities.
We Serve as Outside General Counsel and Provide Comprehensive Legal Services : The firm acts as outside General Counsel for a number of start-up and small to medium size businesses. In this instance, the firm typically works directly with senior management on larger issues, supporting the company with its day-to-day legal needs, such as commercial transactions, employment and HR, real estate matters and other legal needs. Berger Legal has long-standing relationships with law firms providing services in the fields of trademarks, patents and other specialty areas, and we regularly engage such firms to meet client needs as they arise.
We Provide Dedicated Lawyers on a Full-Time or Part-Time Secondment Basis : The firm provides attorneys on a dedicated basis to work on specific projects or to cover staffing gaps for companies and their in-house law departments. Our attorneys have been seconded to work on significant matters during times of merger activity, and have filled in for in-house attorneys on leaves of absence, maternity leaves and other periods of turnover. Clients have turned to Berger Legal in these situations where larger projects or ongoing needs exceed the scope of what the in-house law department is able to cover on a cost-effective basis.
Under this model, Berger Legal provides the benefits of a top-tier law firm without the procedural and economic inefficiencies of traditional legal services. Berger Legal places an attorney to work either remotely or on-site at the client's offices, depending on client need, to serve transparently as in-house counsel. Unlike outside services offered by a traditional law firm, the seconded attorney is able to become intimately familiar with the client's business, build relationships with members of the management or in-house team, and gain greater insight in helping to develop key business strategies while mitigating legal risk. The client also gains the benefit of having the seconded attorney supervised by Berger Legal to ensure high quality work and a smooth transition.
The following are recent firm secondment engagements:
Case Study #1 : A multi-billion dollar financial services company was experiencing an uptick in its day-to-day contract activity. At the same time, one of its senior in-house attorneys was about to go out on maternity leave. The client needed a highly experienced attorney with financial services industry knowledge who could seamlessly become plugged in as a temporary part of the in-house team. Rather than turning to an expensive big firm, the company filled the gap by tapping one of Berger Legal's senior attorneys who previously had served as in-house counsel at a major banking institution.
Case Study #2 : A division of a multi-national communication services company decided to overhaul its legal department to meet the changing needs of its business. But in the interim it needed a seasoned attorney to handle the daily flow of contract negotiations and to counsel management on strategic issues. Berger Legal was able to quickly provide a senior attorney with significant industry experience to bridge the gap until the client was able to interview and hire a permanent General Counsel.
We Represent Companies and Individuals in Complex Civil Litigations : The firm handles a variety of commercial litigation and arbitration matters. Our attorneys have experience litigating across a wide range of sub practice areas, including insurance, employment, complex corporate, alternative dispute resolution, securities, internal investigations and fraud and counterfeiting, among others. All of the firm's litigators gained valuable experience as former law clerks to federal judges in New York and New Jersey.
